“A car doesn’t have source code.”
In a strong sense the plans and design documents from which it’s made _are_ its source code. Anyone with the means to compile (manufacture) the car can take those docs and build the exact same car. There are plenty of open source hardware projects around http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_hardware
Other than that you’re right, ‘open’ is usually an analogy and a frequently deceptive one at that, companies claiming to be open in some vague way that’s supposed to make us like them.
Unlocked, unlatched so watch where your going.
Unsecured, loose, unzipped en definitely not done up.
Unsheltered, vulnerable and exposed to abuse.
Open.
