    In a strong sense the plans and design documents from which it’s made _are_ its source code. Anyone with the means to compile (manufacture) the car can take those docs and build the exact same car.     Other than that you’re right, ‘open’ is usually an analogy and a frequently deceptive one at that, companies claiming to be open in some vague way that’s supposed to make us like them.
